In life, I found that we tend to care a whole lot about things that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. I’ve also learned that we care a whole lot about what other people do. I guess it’s innately inside of us. We’re never at a loss for gossip about celebrities. Reality shows still are ratings hits over ten years after they became popularized. However, if I choose to not dwell on the microwave hot topic of the moment, it doesn’t mean that I’m not abreast of culture. Choosing to look past the craze of the week doesn’t mean I’m for or against anything. It just means I don’t care. It just means that I have better things to give my attention to. The situation of rompers being made for men (ironically called Romphims) is a perfect example of what I could care less about.
For those that don’t know, “rompers” are basically public onesies that are primarily worn by young women. They’re usually worn during the summer months in an attempt to stay cool. The discussion around male rompers was sparked by a Kickstarter page where a company called ACED Design is raising money to fund a male version of a romper called a “Romphim”. I saw a viral tweet of the Kickstarter ad on Twitter where it got tens of thousands of likes, retweets and comments. That, in turn, spread to the other social media websites and then started being covered by the major corporate news outlets such as CNN and Huffington Post. This free advertising has garnered the Romphim Kickstarter project $276,617, well over the $10,000 that ACED Design set out to garner.
Will you catch me walking around the mall or the campus of Fort Valley State University wearing a romper. Not a chance! But, I could care less if a guy is doing it. How does it immediately affect me? The whole notion that black men are being emasculated and feminized is true in every sense. However, Lil’ Uzi Vert wearing a crop top or some random guys on Twitter flexing with their romphims on isn’t going to stop people from having sex and making babies. If you hate romphims so much, just stop talking about it. Trump is liable to do something that leads him closer to being impeached that divert everyone’s attention from it within the next twenty-four hours. Maybe he will get impeached within the next twenty-four hours. All I know is that if you don’t support this idea but you have a crusade against it on your social media pages, you’re doing a lot to spread the word about it.
