Viola Davis Wins People’s Choice Awards Speech, Then Throws Shade, But At Who?

We know you love Viola Davis because of her looks, body, talent, bold decisions and acting ability. Not to mention she just won the 2015 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday, January 7.

The famed actress won the award for Favorite Actress in a New TV Series for her roll as Annalise Keating. This is from the smash hit show, How to Get Away With Murder, produced by the wonderful Shonda Rhimes.

“Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. “I’m so happy that people have accepted me in this role at this stage in my career.”

She is referring to the New York Times article written by Alessandra Standley, a TV critic, where she called Davis “less classically beautiful than [Kerry] Washington.”

As you can imagine the article sparked all sorts of controversy and outrage when she wrote the line, “when Shonda Rhimes writes her autobiography, it should be called ‘How to Get Away With Being an Angry Black Woman.’

I know, right? No she didn’t……but she did.

We couldn’t believe she said it, but it just warmed our hearts to see Davis stand up to this so called critic and toss some shade in her direction on national television during the People’s Choice Awards.

Mad props to you Viola Davis. You are the Shade Champ of the week!
